The Pros and Cons of a Ductless Air Conditioning System

Ductless air conditioners, also called mini-split systems, are a good option if you can’t install central air conditioning in your home.  Your other options are a window or portable air conditioners which usually don’t cool as well as a ductless air conditioner. A ductless unit is a wall-mounted indoors, and it is combined with a compressor that is outside.

Pros

  • They offer more security than a window unit.
  • A small hole needs to be drilled to install the ductless unit and the compressor.
  • They aren’t as loud as a window unit. Air conditioners can keep people up at night because they get so loud.  Ductless units tend to be quieter than window units and some older central air units.
  • They are more energy-efficient than other air conditioners and central air because the air goes directly into the room instead of through ducts first.
  • Compared to central air, a ductless air conditioner doesn’t use as much energy, so monthly energy bills aren’t as high.
  • They are great for garages, shops, work sheds. If you add a room to your home or want an air conditioner for a room that isn’t included in your central air conditioning system, they are a great way to install air conditioning without running new ducting. They are ideal for smaller homes, condos, and basements.
  • You won’t have to worry about air quality as much as you would with central air.

Cons

  • The costs up-front are high.
  • They are on the inside of the home and attached to walls. They are an eyesore compared to central air conditioning.
  • You should wash the filters each month, so the unit works properly.

If you decide to install a ductless air conditioner, consider that the warranty may not be valid unless an HVAC technician installs the unit.  Each unit takes about three to seven hours to install.  Installing one in each room could take a week or longer, depending on your house.
