Summer Tips for Your Plumbing

The summer season is officially upon us and that means that it is time to bring the barbecue out from storage, get the sleeping bags and tent poles all collected from the various corners of the garage, and officially declare “let the summer fun in the sun begin!”

This is a favorite time of year because – while all of the other seasons do have their pros – the summertime is the one time of the year when friends and family can spend some real quality time together.

To make sure that your plumbing system survives the summer season without any kind of major malfunction or breakdown, it is important to be thoughtful of the way that you use your plumbing system each day. And, that means making sure to do these few things:

  • You will be doing a lot more laundry during the summer months because the kids are home from school and, because you have things like sleeping bags, blankets, and beach towels that are getting dirty on a regular basis. Make sure that you keep the lid of your washing machine open to allow the rubber gasket to dry out after each load that you wash. This is important because otherwise you could be running the risk of mold and mildew growing around the lid of your washing machine.
  • Keep a trash bag or trash can outside on your patio to collect all of the leftover or uneaten barbecue food. This will eliminate the chances of things like corn on the cob or watermelon rind from being rinsed down the kitchen drain – where they will cause serious problems for your garbage disposal.
  • Add drain screens over the drains in your bathrooms, utility room, and kitchen to avoid any kind of major clog or drain problem. A drain screen is a very simple to use and inexpensive plumbing accessories that basically lays over the top of a drain and then captures large particles, while letting water move through. The amount of ‘stuff’ that a drain screen can capture is pretty amazing and that means avoid clogs.

Whether you are planning some trips away from your home for extended vacations and road trips or you are more of a stay-cation kind of person and will be sticking close to home – you have to make sure that your home is going to be able to keep up with all of your extra activity. And, this is especially true for your plumbing system.
