When the weather gets cold outside, it becomes even more important to be warm and cozy inside of your house.

A big part of keeping warm while inside of your home is having hot water. In fact, there are few things that you can do inside of your home that do not require hot water.

It’s no wonder then that your water heater is the number two biggest user of electricity in your home. When you look at your power bill you can carve out at least 20% of the entire bill and attribute it to your water heater alone.

Your water heater works 24/7 and unless it has a malfunction, does not stop working. The basic function of a standard tank water heater is to keep a specific volume of water heated to a specific temperature.

This process happens around the clock – whether you are home and using the water or not. For that reason alone, it is very important that you keep your water heater properly maintained and inspected.

Make sure to use these tips for keeping your water heater in top working condition this fall:

  • If you haven’t done so already, head out to your favorite home improvement store and purchase an insulated blanket for your water heater tank. These blankets are great for protecting your water heater from working too hard. When the weather gets colder, your water heater has to work harder to keep the water hot because the temperature outside of the tank works against it. A water heater blanket helps to minimize this effect.
  • Schedule a professional water heater inspection. These inspections should be done annually and can help to reduce the problems that your water heater faces in the future. It is best to have these inspections done now before the weather turns cold as having a water heater malfunction in the cold weather is a lot more stressful than if the weather is still warm.
  • Consider adding low-flow fixtures to all of the bathrooms in your home. Your bathrooms are used every day and by adding low-flow fixtures, you can minimize the amount of hot water that is used and thus the amount that your water heater needs to work.

Keep in mind that once the weather turns cold – any kind of water heater breakdown will be a lot more stressful. Use these next few weeks of warm weather before the fall arrives to make sure that your water heater is in top working condition.

I guess it would have been nice if I discovered this post earlier and realized the importance of annual water heater inspection in order to reduce the chances of having problems with it in the future. My parents told me that the water was showing signs of problems, and it hasn’t even been half a decade since we bought it. Hopefully, by calling a professional to check on the functions of the water heater, we can still save it. Thank you. I’ll follow your tips from now on.
