Preparing Your Fort Worth Plumbing During a Hard Freeze

The damage that happens when frozen pipes burst is substantial. By following these preventive tips you can keep your Fort Worth plumbing safe when temperatures plummet below freezing.

One of the most important things is for every family member to know where and how to shut off the main water supply in case frozen pipes rupture. The following are things that every homeowner should do to prevent a cold weather plumbing emergency.

1. Insulate any exposed pipes and all pipes running outdoors, in crawl spaces or garages. Use pipe insulation or layers of newspaper wrapped in plastic. UL heat tape may be appropriate; anything is better than nothing at all.

2. Allow faucets to run at a slow trickle.

3. Winterize your pool, outdoor hot tub or sauna and activate any freeze protection controls.

4. Disconnect any outdoor hoses or irrigation systems and wrap exposed piping and hose bibs in rags and plastic.

If you must be away for any length of time during a hard freeze weather forecast leave under-the-sink cabinet doors open and set temperature no lower than 55 degrees. If pipes do freeze remove any insulation or layered newspaper and re-wrap pipes with rags. Open all faucets and pour hot water over the pipes starting where the most exposed area where the cold penetrated the pipes.
